Texas is a road-tripper’s dream for military RV camping. It’s the biggest state in the lower 48, home to more major military installations than anywhere in the country, and its FamCamps stretch from the Gulf Coast beaches to the Hill Country lakes to the West Texas desert. Whether you’re PCSing across the state, snowbirding down to the Rio Grande Valley, or just exploring, military families can camp their way across Texas at a fraction of civilian campground prices. This guide covers the verified FamCamps, Army recreation areas, and Navy RV parks across Texas, organized by region, with firsthand notes on what to expect.
Every campground listed here is open to eligible military ID holders — active duty, retirees, veterans, and DoD civilians, depending on the facility. Many sit on lakes or the Gulf, and nightly rates run well below comparable civilian RV parks. As always, confirm current availability and access rules with the installation before you travel.
San Antonio & the Texas Hill Country
The San Antonio area, anchored by Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), is the hub of military camping in Texas — close to the River Walk, the Alamo, and the lakes and rivers of the Hill Country just to the north.
- JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake (Canyon Lake) — JBSA’s lakeside recreation destination about 45 miles north of San Antonio, now the consolidated home of what were formerly the Randolph and Fort Sam Houston recreation areas. Full-hookup and electric RV sites, cabins, a marina, boat ramp, and swimming beach on beautiful Canyon Lake.
- Fort Sam Houston RV Park (JBSA-Fort Sam Houston) — A convenient urban RV park just five minutes from downtown San Antonio and its attractions.
- Lackland FamCamp (JBSA-Lackland) — Full-hookup sites on JBSA-Lackland, a handy base for exploring San Antonio with full base access.
San Antonio insider tip: The JBSA parks are among the most convenient urban military campgrounds anywhere — you’re minutes from the River Walk and SeaWorld, with the Hill Country’s Canyon Lake and Guadalupe River an easy day trip north. Book the Canyon Lake park early for summer weekends; it’s popular with the whole San Antonio military community.
The Texas Gulf Coast
South Texas offers warm-weather, waterfront camping on the Gulf — a favorite for winter Texans (the local term for snowbirds) escaping colder states.
- NAS Corpus Christi RV Park (Corpus Christi) — Every site faces Corpus Christi Bay at this Navy park six miles south of the city. Around 80 full-hookup sites, a boat launch, and world-class fishing in the Laguna Madre. The USS Lexington museum and Texas State Aquarium are nearby.
- Rocking K RV Park (NAS Kingsville) — A quieter South Texas option on NAS Kingsville, in the heart of ranch country and within reach of the coast.
Gulf Coast insider tip: Coastal winds can gust hard at Corpus Christi — don’t leave awnings out, and rinse salt off your rig. Winter (November through March) is peak “winter Texan” season, so reserve ahead; summers are hot but far more open.
Central Texas (Fort Cavazos area)
- Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area / BLORA (Belton) — A large, well-loved Army recreation area on Belton Lake near Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), with RV sites, cabins, a beach, water park, zip line, and boat rentals. One of the best all-around military rec areas in the state.
- Montague Travel Camp (Fort Cavazos) — An on-post travel camp at Fort Cavazos itself, convenient for those with business on base.
West Texas
Big skies, desert scenery, and gateway access to Big Bend country — West Texas FamCamps are practical stopovers and destinations in their own right.
- Fort Bliss RV Park & Family Campground (El Paso) — A large, modern RV park on Fort Bliss in El Paso, right at the far-west corner of Texas and the New Mexico line. A great basecamp for White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, and the mountains.
- Dyess AFB FamCamp (Abilene) — A tidy FamCamp on Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, home of the B-1 bomber.
- Goodfellow Recreation Camp (San Angelo) — A lakeside recreation camp on Lake Nasworthy near Goodfellow AFB, popular for fishing and boating.
- Southwinds Marina & Recreation Area (Del Rio) — A Laughlin AFB recreation area on Lake Amistad near the Mexican border, with a marina and great bass fishing.
North Texas
- Sheppard AFB FamCamp (Wichita Falls) — A FamCamp on Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, near the Oklahoma line — a handy stop on I-44 between Texas and Oklahoma City.
- Red River Army Depot Cabins & Camping (Texarkana) — Cabin and camping options at Red River Army Depot in far northeast Texas, near the Arkansas border.
Who can stay at Texas military campgrounds?
Eligibility varies slightly by facility, but most Texas FamCamps and Army recreation areas are open to active duty, retirees, National Guard and Reserve members, 100% disabled veterans, and DoD civilians. Since 2020, access at many installations has expanded to include veterans with a service-connected disability rating and Purple Heart recipients. The JBSA parks and larger recreation areas like BLORA often give active duty reservation priority during peak season. A valid military or DoD ID is required for base access at all locations.
Tips for military RV camping in Texas
- Plan for distance. Texas is enormous — El Paso to Texarkana is a 12-hour drive. The FamCamps here double as excellent, affordable stopovers when crossing the state.
- Book Hill Country and coast for summer/winter peaks. Canyon Lake and BLORA fill on summer weekends; the Gulf Coast parks fill with winter Texans October through March.
- Summer heat is real. Central and South Texas run hot and humid May through September — look for shaded or full-hookup sites so you can run AC.
- Always verify before you travel. Gate access rules, rates, and availability change. Call the campground office directly to confirm — every listing on Military RV Sites includes the current phone number.
