Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area (LETRA)
Overview
Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area — LETRA for short — sits 12 miles northwest of Fort Sill's main post in southwestern Oklahoma, on a 360-acre no-wake lake at the base of Mount Scott. RV sites are available year-round, alongside tent and primitive camping options. The Base Camp store carries snacks, drinks, and gear rentals, and the area supports fishing, boating, hiking, archery, and a lifeguarded beach during summer months. Access requires a Military or DoD ID card. Civilian visitors must get a Visitor's Pass at the Visitor Welcome Center near Sheridan Road Gate before entering — passes can be arranged up to 30 days in advance. The primary entrance uses Apache Gate on Hwy 49; the LETRA Gate off OK-49 near Medicine Park is reserved for weather emergencies only. Enter via Apache Gate (Hwy 49), Sheridan Road Gate, or Key Gate — do not GPS the address from outside Fort Sill, or you'll be routed to a closed gate. Non-active-duty visitors need a Fort Sill visitor pass in advance (REAL ID or approved alternate ID required). Office closed Mondays and Tuesdays in some seasons — confirm hours before arrival. Call the LETRA office (via sill.armymwr.com) to reserve.
